How it counts

What counts as a word, sentence, and paragraph

Word counts differ between tools because each one draws the lines a little differently. Here is exactly how this one works.

Words

Anything between spaces or line breaks is one word, including numbers and hyphenated terms. The same rule our detector uses for plan allowances.

Sentences

Split on periods, question marks, and exclamation points using your browser’s built-in English sentence rules.

Paragraphs

Every line with text on it counts once. Blank lines between paragraphs are ignored.

Time

Reading time assumes 238 words a minute, an average adult pace. Speaking time assumes 140, a steady presentation pace.

Hit your word count. Now check how it reads.

FAQ

Word counter questions

How does the word counter decide what a word is?

Anything between spaces or line breaks counts as one word. A hyphenated term like “state-of-the-art” is one word, and so is a number or an abbreviation like “e.g.”. It is the same rule our AI detector uses for plan word allowances, so the two always agree.

How is reading time calculated?

Word count divided by 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adults reading non-fiction. Speaking time uses 140 words per minute, a steady pace for a talk or presentation.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

No. Every count runs in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded or stored. Text only leaves your device if you choose “Check for AI”, which opens it in our detector.

How are sentences and paragraphs counted?

Sentences use your browser’s built-in English sentence rules, which split on periods, question marks, and exclamation points. Common abbreviations such as “Dr.” and “e.g.” don’t end a sentence. Every line that has text on it counts as a paragraph.

Should I use characters with or without spaces?

Social posts, meta descriptions, and most form limits count spaces, so use the main character count. Some translation and publishing rates are quoted per character without spaces; that figure is under More details.

Can this tell me if text was written by AI?

The counter only measures length. To check for AI writing, press “Check for AI” and the text opens in our detector. Free accounts get 3 scans a day, with no card needed.
